“BUSYNESS” VS PRODUCTIVITY

“Busyness” does not necessarily denote productivity.  The dictionary meaning of productivity is the ability to bring forth satisfactory, useful or worthwhile results.  Thus, being fully occupied with a meaningful activity, work-related or not, does not signify achieving results.  Think about it: You may be busy turning round and round at a spot, and after 15 minutes find that you are still at that spot or only a few steps away due to imbalance.  Has progress being made at all or anything meaningful achieved? I think not!

In the last couple of years, I have learnt that productivity is much better than being busy – which is a no-brainer, really, but sometimes takes forever to learn!  The way things are now globally, it would be wise to reduce our times of “busyness” while simultaneously increasing our productivity.  Our “busyness” might make us look productive, serious and executive-like in the eyes of our friends, family and colleagues, but who are we fooling?

Here are a few suggestions that I have found useful for productivity.

  • List and carry out your tasks in the order of importance.  Focus first on the essential and important ones that only YOU can do.
  • Don’t try and cram all your tasks into the one day!  Do some re-scheduling.
  • Identify the unimportant tasks that are can be postponed for another day and leave them for your day off. An example is window shopping during lunch time, especially when you are cash-challenged, or DIY chores at home.
  • Delegate the ones that do not need YOU to handle, even some house chores to your older children and some office assignments to other capable staff members.
  • Don’t leave tasks to pile up on you.
  • Make good use of free times, e.g. times spent waiting to pick up your children
  • Reduce times spent ‘gisting’ – whether on the phone or at the office canteen
  • Do what you know to do best to de-stress because it rejuvenates you for better productivity.
  • Use of modern technology to your advantage
  • Listen to your body and take a break when you need to.  It enhances performance and productivity
  • Become an early riser and get some work done before the hustle and bustle of the day actually starts. You’ll find that you can get more done in lesser time.
  • Learn to say a definite “no” to some tasks, favours, requests or engagements.

The above are in no way exhaustive, so if you have other suggestions, please email me on toluwani@exousiatraining.com .   Your post may well save somebody’s life, business or marriage!

GET RID OF THOSE WEIGHTS!

Have you ever tried running with weights tied to your ankle?  Well, it would be like something near mission impossible, wouldn’t it, with your mind raring to eat up those miles and your body lagging behind because some weights just won’t let you get on with it.

Many of us set goals for ourselves, with very good intentions to follow them through.  However, one of the reasons why we don’t achieve what we set out to is because of the weights we let into our lives.

Now, weights are not necessarily bad or evil things, but they are those things in your life that easily distract you.  They subtly take over and cause us to take our eyes off our goals.  At the end of the year we are left wondering where the days all went.

The weights that slow us down differ from person to person; for some it could be TV (home videos are such subtle time-wasters), for others it could be the time spent on the Internet.  Others may find that it is too much time spent “hanging out” with friends while for others it’s too much time spent sleeping or other habits that have crept up on you.  Each person has to do the work of finding out what those weighs are in his/her life, but for everyone the effects are the same: time wasted, momentum and zeal lost, inability to follow through with what you set out to achieve and regrets when you take stock at the end of the year.

There’s still time to locate those weights and deal with them, and there’s only one thing to do: GET RID OF THEM AND START HEADING FOR THE FINISH LINE!

REFOCUS, REPOSITION, RELAUNCH

I have been thinking a lot about vision in the last few months and have actually been privileged to speak on it in the last few weeks.  You may have heard a lot about vision in times past or have done some study on it. Whatever the case it does not harm to remind you about a few things:

Your life’s vision guides your life, lights your path and orders your steps. It restrains you from living like an ordinary person when you should be learning the ropes of how to rule and reign, to lead and to take responsibility. Your vision gives you a reason to get up every morning with purpose and determination. It leads you to make the necessary changes in your life that would lead to its fulfilment, even when those changes bring initial discomfort and even distress.  It leads you to making choices of long-term value.

Take a moment to think about your vision for your life. If you have never articulated it, please do so NOW. If you have never written it down, please do so NOW.  This is so very important……, and if you have ever written it down at any time, please go back to where you have it, read it all over again, do an evaluation and if need be, REFOCUS, REPOSITION, RELAUNCH.
